Wise family papers, 1821-1900.

Papers consist almost exclusively of receipts and promissory notes, with receipts for payments from the estates of John Derrick and William Etheredge. The Wise family was associated with a variety of businesses in Prosperity, S.C., among them Wise Bros. and Wise & Lathan. Wise Bros. is identified from printed letterhead receipts as dealers in millinery, dry goods, boots and shoes, clothing, and choice family groceries. Proprietors were J.L. Wise, A.G. Wise, and J.H. Wise. Included is a Wise Bros. printed token card dated 9 Mar. 1881 that was redeemable for merchandise. Other Prosperity, S.C., businesses represented here are cotton merchants J.L. & A.G. Wise; Prosperity Stock Company; Isadore Ruff, wagon and buggy maker and repairer; Wheeler & Moseley; Moseley Bros.; Luther & Hawkins, cotton buyers and dealers in general merchandise; and E.S. Dominick, dealer in dry goods, boots and shoes, hats and caps, groceries, and confectioneries. Of interest also are receipts for newspaper subscriptions taken out by George and Walter Michael Wise to the News Mirror (Newberry, S.C., 6 Mar. 1855), Weekly Mirror (Newberry, S.C., 2 June 1856), Columbia Banner (Columbia, S.C., 1 Apr. 1857), Conservatist (Newberry, S.C., ca. 1 Feb. 1859), Press & Reporter (Prosperity, S.C., 1 Dec. [18]88 and 23 Apr. 1892), Lutheran Visitor (Prosperity, S.C., 14 Oct. 1889), and Prosperity Advertiser (Prosperity, S.C., 9 Dec. 1896). Also present are records of payment of tuition at Prosperity High School and to E.L. Moore, tutor of Hawlick Academy; voter registration certificates for Walter Michael Wise, Stoney Battery precinct, Prosperity, Newberry County, S.C.; and a manuscript with notations presumably concerning births of four unidentified male slave children in 1858 and 1859.
